About the Challenge

The challenge is to raise funds for ReachOut by completing 20 marathons in the 2012 Irish season. A breakdown of all the marathons can be found here, in the “Race Times” section.

About Oliver Clare

I live in Ireland and am currently working as a trainee accountant. I’m also interested in other stuff such as debating, football, politics, film, progressive euro-trance/jazz crossover music, languages and many other things not directly applicable to marathon running.

I got involved with Inspire Ireland following a meeting with their ambassador Nigel O’ Callaghan and Vince McCarthy, their community engagement manager. Fortunately, they agreed with my argument that lactic acid is probably just a myth anyway and that running 20 marathons in 2012 was clearly the most practical way to go about raising funds and awareness of issues surrounding mental health! I’ve been preparing for this challenge since last October and will be posting regular updates on my progress. Please feel free to follow said progress on this blog or join the ‘Running for Reachout’ pages on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr!

  13. What a fantastic and purposble way to advocate for mental illness. You are amazing and inspiring. I have never run and the furthest I have ever hiked is 13 miles in one day.
    Sincerely,

  14. Your challenge is very tough :) I am a runner and my longest race have only been a 5k and I haven’t raced more than about 10 of those per year. Good luck and thanks for reaching out to those who need help. http://meksoluminous.wordpress.com/

  15. So inspired! I could only handle 12 fun runs in 12 months for my chosen charity this year! I liked the 12/12/2012 kind of feel – but 20 marathons, that is incredible! Have you seen the doco on Eddy Izzard Marathon Man? Running back to back marathons? Talk about crazy! I think running, pushing yourself in events like these definitely show others how committed you are to your cause, as they are tough events that not everyone can do. Hats off to you! Fingers crossed I’ll be running my first marathon in 2013!

  18. Great idea and a very great cause!
I recently ran 10km (http://www.bridgetobrisbane.com.au/) for charity – it was hard work, but nothing like the miles you are clocking up :)

  19. You have a very ambitious goal. I don’t do any running but admire what you’re doing.

Amazing goal – Best wishes on reaching it ! I am in awe of people who can run a marathon and 12 in one season, wow. Thank you also for dropping in on my blog. I should really dig out some notes on how to help with the pain of lactic acid build up – or are you pretty much on top if this problem by now?

  21. I just ran my first marathon and it was an amazing experience. I love what you are doing – its very inspiring. Well done and good luck with your goal. I am routing for you :)

  22. Love your sight. Very encouraging. Keep it up and can’t wait to see what you do! Might have to start running again and see what I can do.

  24. Thank you so much for all your effort toward mental health, from a Grandmother raising three mentally disabled Grandchildren in Canada. http://www.challengedhope.wordpress.com.

  25. Your blog is certainly unique, I will follow with interest! I think it is amazing that you are actively supporting a mental health charity. It means so much to the people who use the service.

  28. The challenge you and your colleagues have set for yourselves is inspirational. It cannot but help but raise awareness of mental health issues in your country. In Canada mental health is very low on the medical, social and political agendas, and understandable ignorance about mental health issues is widespread. There is a recently established organization, however, which offers some hope–Partners for Mental Health.

  29. This is a beautiful thing you are doing!

Thank you so much for following Sown in Peace. I think what your doing is great, I have known a few people in Canada with mental illness, mainly bipoloar or depression. And I know how hard support is to find when your your just trying to make it through a day. teaching the world and educating about Compassion is hard work, but your doing it in leaps and bounds lol :)

  31. And people think I am crazy for doing and hosting/sponsoring extreme endurance motorcycle rides for non-profit groups! Wow, man 20 marathons in a year; incredible. You my friend are awesome.

  35. Wow! I don’t know much (anything, actually) about running but I know a thing or two about mental health issues. So thank you, you running, blogging role model!

    October 18, 2012
  36. And here I am debating whether I can fit training in for ONE marathon his year… you are a total inspiration! Guess I had better take the plunge!

    October 18, 2012
  37. LOVE the blog! It seems to be pretty rare that I find another blogger from Ireland, specially one into running! Good luck with everything, and you never know, maybe I’ll be in a marathon one day too…

  38. The idea of running that many marathons in one year is astounding to me, but I’ve also just started running. I love that you’re doing this to help young people! ^_^

I’ve been putting off registering for the second marathon (of my life!) for years and here you are knocking out 20! Great work and good luck with your remaining races. It’s all the more inspiring that you’re doing it for a great cause. I’m also jealous that you’re doing it in Ireland. I had the pleasure of visiting a few years back and I’d rather run there than in the States any day. Best.

  40. Holy heck that is one hell of a challenge you have set for yourself haha
Totally mad, which equals completely awesome. Love it :)
I am planning to run my first marathon next year and have just read a couple of your posts. Being new to running and currently struggling, its good to read about some of your experiences. Motivation is one thing, but I think determination is the key ( and a little craziness )
    Good luck !!!!

  41. You are working on a worthwhile cause; I think the whole mental health subject is one that needs more understanding and concern, more current and beneficial thought. Kudos to you!

  51. A great challenge for an even greater cause. Good luck to you, you one mighty crazy runner!!! :)

    November 27, 2012
  52. Thanks for following my blog, and good luck with your plans! 20 marathons in one year? That roughly means one every two or three weeks. That is a heck of a lot of stress on the body! But, if you can do it, great. Go for it!

    November 28, 2012
  53. Congrats on all you’ve accomplished and kudos to you for choosing such an amazing way to support a cause that’s so important to you.

  55. Wow, i thought my ambition of 8 in 8 months was a little crazy. You win! Whats the shortest turnaround between 2 of your marathons? Im thinking of doing 2 only 1 week apart, but that might be too much, even for me!
